Bolt Concreting has been laying concrete across the Manawatū since 2014, and slabs are a steady part of it. Shed and garage floors for houses in Kelvin Grove and Whakarongo, sleepout and extension foundations around Hokowhitu and Terrace End, and farm and workshop slabs out towards Ashhurst and Bunnythorpe. It is work we do constantly, which is the main reason we do it quickly and without surprises.
We are deliberately small. The person who comes out to measure your slab is the same person who digs it out, sets the boxing, screeds the pour and runs the trowel over the finish. Nothing gets lost being handed between crews, and there is no subcontractor to blame if something is not right.
A slab has to carry whatever ends up on it — a car, a boat, a bench full of gear, or a whole building — and it has to sit dead flat while doing it. That is why what happens under the slab matters more than what happens on top of it. We get the sub-base right, lay the damp-proof membrane, use the correct mix and reinforcing for the load, cut the control joints where they belong, and cure it properly instead of rushing to the next job.
Everything that decides whether a slab stays flat happens before the truck arrives. We strip the topsoil, excavate to depth and bring in basecourse, compacting it in layers until it is solid underfoot. Soft ground gets dug out rather than poured over.
Then the polythene damp-proof membrane goes down and gets taped at the laps, boxing is set to the finished floor level, and the mesh goes on chairs so it sits inside the slab instead of on the ground. On an engineered slab the steel and the thickenings get inspected before anyone pours.
The pour is screeded off the boxing, floated, and power floated to a hard, flat finish. Control joints are saw-cut once it has gone off, then it is cured properly rather than left to dry out. Curing is what separates a floor that stays clean from one that dusts.
The prep is the same on all of them. What changes is the thickness, the reinforcing and the finish, and those get set by what is going on top. We work that out on site before we price it.

A standard shed or garage floor is 100mm over a compacted basecourse with 665 mesh. Workshops, farm sheds and anything carrying plant or a heavy vehicle go thicker with heavier reinforcing. A slab that is part of a building is poured to the engineer’s spec. We work out what yours needs at the quote rather than pouring the same slab everywhere.
Most shed and garage slabs take two to three days from dig-out to pour. Larger or engineered slabs take longer because of the extra steelwork and inspections. You get the schedule up front and we stick to it.
A slab that is the foundation of a building usually does, and it has to be poured to an engineer’s design and inspected before the pour. A plain floor inside an existing structure generally does not. We will tell you which one you are dealing with at the quote.
Yes, as standard on anything enclosed. Without it, ground moisture comes straight up through the slab and you get damp gear, sweating floors and coatings that will not stick.
Flat enough that your roller door seals, your bench does not rock and nothing pools in a corner. We set levels off the door and the existing structure, then screed and power float to get there.
Yes, and it is very common. Send us the shed plan. We pour to the manufacturer’s dimensions and set the bolt or anchor positions so the kit lands on it without any adjustment on the day.
You can walk on it after 24 to 48 hours and put light gear on it after seven days. Leave vehicles and heavy plant off it for a month. We tell you exactly when yours is ready.
Yes. If you plan on an epoxy or a sealer, tell us before we pour — the finish we leave changes what the coating will bond to. A power-float finish suits most coatings; a broom finish does not.
