ABOUT OUR DRIVEWAY REPAIR SERVICE

Most driveways fail in one place, not everywhere.

A driveway takes more punishment than anything else on the property, and it almost never gives out evenly. It is the bay by the garage that has cracked, the section at the road where every vehicle turns in, or one dropped slab where water has been getting under the edge for years. The remaining eighty per cent is usually fine.

That is worth knowing, because a lot of homeowners are quoted a full replacement for a problem that lives in one bay. Cutting the failed section out to a control joint, rebuilding the base and pouring that bay back costs a fraction of the driveway, and once it has weathered in you would struggle to pick it.

What makes the difference is dealing with why it went. A dropped slab means the ground under it has washed out, and pouring new concrete onto the same void just resets the clock. We sort the base and the drainage first, then pour. And when a driveway genuinely is past repairing, we say that instead — we pour new driveways every week, so we have no reason to talk you into the wrong one.

How we repair a driveway section

We start by marking out where the repair will end. Wherever possible that is an existing control joint, because a straight cut on a line the driveway already has is what stops the repair looking like a patch.

The failed concrete is saw-cut and lifted out, then we get into the base. This is where the actual problem usually is — washed-out fill, a soft spot, or water tracking under the slab from a downpipe or a poorly set fall. It gets dug out, rebuilt and compacted, and drainage sorted if that is what caused it.

Reinforcing is tied into the existing slab so the new bay is connected rather than sitting alongside it. Then we pour, finish to match the surrounding concrete as closely as it can be matched, cut the joints and cure it properly.

what we repair

The four we get called about

Nearly every driveway repair is one of these, and all four are worth dealing with before they spread. A cracked bay left alone lets water into the base, and then it is two bays.

Cracked bays

Cut out to the joint, base rebuilt, repoured and finished to match. The cause gets fixed first so the crack does not come back.

Sunken & rocking sections

The ground underneath has gone. We take the section up, rebuild and compact the base properly, then pour it back level.

Crumbling edges

Unsupported driveway edges break away where wheels run over them. Formed up, repoured and backfilled so they hold.

Damaged vehicle crossings

The section between your boundary and the road takes every vehicle turning off the kerb. Often the first part to break up, and rebuilt to council spec.

Why homeowners pick us for their concrete repair projects

We turn up, we do the job properly, and we do not leave until it is right. Twelve years of laying concrete across the Manawatū means there is not much we have not poured. The same standard goes on a two-metre path as goes on a full driveway.

FAQs

Driveway repair questions we get asked

Can you repair part of a driveway instead of the whole thing?

Yes, and that is most of what we do here. We saw-cut the failed section out to an existing control joint, rebuild the base and pour that bay back. The rest of the driveway is untouched, so you pay for the part that has gone rather than all of it.

How much of the driveway has to fail before replacement makes more sense?

There is no fixed number, but as a rule once several separate bays have gone, or the slab is thin throughout, repairs stop being the cheaper path. Each one buys a year or two and the next is never far away. We add it up with you on site.

Why do driveways crack near the garage or the road?

Those are the two points that take the most load and the most movement. At the road the crossing carries every vehicle turning in off the kerb, and at the garage the slab often meets a different foundation. Cracks at both ends usually come down to thickness and jointing rather than bad luck.

Can you fix a driveway that has sunk?

Yes. A sunken section means the ground beneath it has washed out or was never compacted, so we take that section up, rebuild and compact the base, and repour to the joint. Filling the dip at the surface leaves the void underneath and it drops again.

Will the repaired bay match the rest of the driveway?

We match the finish and get as close on colour as we can, and cutting to a control joint means the repair reads as one bay of the driveway rather than a patch. It will still be visible at first and it closes the gap over the first year or two as it weathers.

Do you repair damaged vehicle crossings?

Yes. The crossing between your boundary and the road takes a hammering and is often the first section to break up. Repairs to an existing crossing are usually straightforward; if it is being widened or relocated, that needs council approval and we handle the application.

How long does a driveway repair take?

Most section repairs are one to two days — cut out and base work on the first day, pour and finish on the second. You can walk on it after 24 to 48 hours and drive on it after about a week.

Can I keep using the driveway while it is being repaired?

Usually only partly. If the failed section is at the entrance you will be parking on the street for a few days. We tell you exactly what access you will have and when, before we start, so it is not a surprise on the morning.

Which areas do you cover?

All of Palmerston North and the wider Manawatū, including Ashhurst, Bunnythorpe, Feilding, Longburn and Linton.

Is the on-site quote really free?

Completely. We measure, talk through the options and leave you a written price. If it is not right for you, no hard feelings.
